Heading Out!

Living in any country in Africa leads to the opportunity for amazing experiences of many sorts. The Harare international school's Explore Zimbabwe program is a perfect example of this. For one week a year, every class from elementary school to 11th grade goes on a trip to a different part of the country.
Today the HIS junior class leaves the comforts of life in Harare for 5 days of a rural Zimbabwean experience in Juru village. We will be camping there, and are being hosted by local families for the 5 days. We will also be running a literacy program for the students of Kadyamadare school there. It is going to be an experience that is sure to teach us all a lot about life, and give us a healthy dose of perspective in the process.
I personally am extremely excited. When we were first briefed on the trip, and told about the lack of water, showers, bathrooms and whatnot, there was a bit of hesitation from the whole class, but when half of us showed up for the planning trip a week later, that seemed to have disappeared completely. I am cautiously optimistic that the entire grade will truly submerse themselves in the culture and the experience. I for one could not be more ready for a week of something that I couldn't experience anywhere else, and possibly won't ever again.
If nothing else I feel like this will teach myself and my fellow classmates to be more appreciative of how we live, and maybe less judgemental towards others' lifestyles.
So for the moment, goodbye internet! And electricity... And flushing toilets... They are all overrated anyway.
